The Challenge of The Gettysburg Address and The Star Spangled Banner

“Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

[Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate-we can not consecrate-we can not hallow-this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

The job to which Lincoln mentioned is far from done. Trump’s arrogant tirade and what he stands for is just the next challenge we face. By voting, speaking, writing and praying so that we have the “New burst of freedom” we so desperately need at this time.

“The government of the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” Lincoln recognized that this beautiful country can revert to a government to a government of kings and tyrants and thereby perish. It can happen. To many steps toward a fall of our values in our government have already been taken.

“….that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth”

The Star Spangled offers the same warning. “Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

 

The lyrics asks a question. Does “The Star Spangled Still Wave over our dear country. The flag still waves but there are severe attacks on the issue of which people have their status of ‘free” being challenged by white supre The foundind Fathers made a mistake when only the white land owners could vote. Lincoln included black people. Women got the right  to vote in the last century. Gays got the right to marry a few years ago and trans gendered people situation is challeged but seems to be moving forward.  We have made such progress to date.

WE cannot let the white supremetists erode our progress. The Nazi flag has no place in America. The sacrifice of millions during theSecon World War is as sacred as the soldiers that Lincoln honored at Gettysberg, Our troops are dying as I write.

I  am sickened literally by what Trunp said. We face a struggle. I do not know exactly what to do next but I depend on God and all that is good in the Univrese to guide me but I have to be in on the fight. It is my Constitutional right to struggle against those that threatens The American Way.

I am 79 years old now and lack the physical stength to fight in an army but I can write this and then diligent search for the next thing I can do. I need you commitment, this nation needs your commitmen and the beauty God has given us need your commitment.

The nation of France signaled that they commend and join in our commitment to liberty by giving us The Statue Of Liberty.  It is still there overseing our nation, encouraging us on to fight for true freedom.
