The Most Misunderstood Verse in The Bible

I don’t really know this is the worst misunderstood in The Bible but that is the way it feels to me right now. Here is the passage from Ephesians Five

 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

The Misunderstood verse is vs 22. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. The verse is true that wives should  submit to their husbands. The problem is that the verse is quoted completely out of context

The passage begins “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”  Verse 22 only mentions how the wives should act without mentioning how the husband should treat their wife though the topic sentence says how every one should  submit  to everyone else.

The passage as a whole talks extensively about the husbands should treat their wives. For example, “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. If husbands are to relate to their wives  as Jesus did they would lay down their life for their wife.

Again For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. ” For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. What does that say about the wife who has never had her husband lay down his life for her. If the husband is ruling over the wife having never laid down his life he just a dictator.

Christ put my needs first to the extent he emptied himself so my needs could be met. That defines the responsibility. of the husband. I failed to act in that manner in my own marriage which ended in a bitter divorce.

For me their is a more basic concept than the idea of submission.  Jesus says all the law and prophets are summed up in the saying “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Therefore I enjoy being able to  retranslation of the word “Submit” as follows: Husbands love you wife and wives love your husband or Wives love your husbands and husbands love your wives.
